A Flame in the Eye of Love

I have been night watching.
The long silk robe of night Burst into flame And some slight part of me became holy And the rest went away. I have been to the dark: My eyes nailed to the dark Like paintings. I have been to the dark sea That is me. And some part of my being Tore its robes apart And some other part of me Lay down in the light. My fishing soul Has swallowed itself. My body has burst open in hunger And has eaten the night. My fishing soul Has caught the ocean. I have been night watching. I have watched the flesh And the spirit Until they became two wings. And what they held up, And what they spoke of as they flew away No one can say or paint with a word. Yet I can write with an invisible blood And I can tell you to keep watching Until the night watches you. Look deep into that face And If you keep steadfastly looking You will become a flame In the eye of Love.
