Speaking Through the Opening: Allowing Your Life to Be Your Poem, by Eric Ashford

Early dawn
and the market in Chaing Mai
huddles by the floating mists
of the Ping river.

Young girls squat over upturned straw hats.
Hats full of small dangerous chillies,
or tiny smoked anchovies.
They chatter like little birds
and smile shyly as we barter for
a few cupfuls of their produce.

The market people are not from the city.
They ride in on bicycles
from the villages,
sometimes all through the night.

They have only a small amount of fish
and chilies to sell
but their patient work
is so lovely to watch
as they pour their labour into old newspaper
carefully bundling and tying
the purchases together
with a pink ribbon of raffia.

They offer this token of their livelihood to us
and they also offer us the chance
to share in their simplicity.
They offer us grace.

A few coins are passed.
It is a simple thing we partake in
but so much more than an exchange of money.
It is ritual of recognition
where we see the needs of each other.
Such very different needs we have
yet here by the crossroads of the dreaming river
they are the same.

A holy thing transpires.
