Anne Bradsteet was the first published poet in colonial America.

She came to Massachussetts at age 18 with her new husband and her parents. Her father was governor of the colony and, later, her husband assumed the same office. She eventually gave birth to eight children.

Her poems speak of marriage, love, passion, and loss from the perspective of a woman of the American colonies -- yet there is often a hint something deeper, as well. More than simple religious devotionalism, there is the suggestion of mystical experience that colors her view of life.
