swim nine thousand miles alone
home in slow motion.

what I was

Sometimes I miss it,
that heavy shell I
used to wear on my back,
but at least I can
see its beauty now.

At the Two Turtles in Sausalito,
when a babelicious floated in on the half shell
we used to ask,
"Are you a turtle?"

dressed in leatherback shells
caught in a fishnet.

"Are you are turtle?"
I wanted to know.

Her heart glowed with amber wine
from four hundred sunsets.
She turned slowly,
soft and low,
"All the
boys like me,
'cause I take my time."

VELMA'S BLUE

Velma had just finished
composing her sonnet
number four hundred
when on came the sunset
of her long, fruitful life.
"Ah, no more dread,"
she said and then
dropped dead.
