Spain under Muslim rule in the Middle Ages was one of the safest places for Jews, especially those with political ambitions. Samuel ha-Nagid was a statesman and military leader in the service of the Muslim ruler of Granada in southern Spain.

Poetry composed in Hebrew was traditionally religious poetry, secular poetry being composed in the common languages. But Samuel ha-Nagid broke with convention and wrote poetry on politics and war, as well as devotion, in Hebrew.
