How the days drag

by Lalan
(1775? - 1891?) Timeline

English version by
Deben Bhattacharya

Original Language
Bengali

Yoga / Hindu
Muslim / Sufi
19th Century

How the days drag
before union with the man of my heart!
Round the hours
of the day and night
as the rain-bird, chataka,
watches the clouds,
I gaze at the black-moon
hoping to surrender myself
at his feet--in vain.

Like lightning
flashing through the clouds
and hiding in the clouds
never to be found again,
I saw his beauty
flashing through my dreams
and I lost Krishna.
