Alexander Pope was born in London. His grandfather was an Anglican vicar, but his father, a cloth merchant, converted to Catholicism.

Although a brilliant student, Alexander Pope's early education was erratic, since institutionalized prejudices against his family's Catholicism kept forcing him to switch schools, and finally he studied at home.

In 1700, when he was a young adolescent, Alexander Pope contracted tuberculosis, leaving him with a lifetime of respiratory problems and poor health. He was also quite short, under 5 feet tall, and had a hunched back. In the aggressive literary battles fought by the London intelligentsia, his critics labeled Alexander Pope the "hunchbacked toad."

Despite his physical limitations, Pope rose to become the preeminent English essayist, satirist, and poet of the era.
