Hsuan Chueh is often referred to respectfully as Hsuan Chueh of Yung Chia, or simply Master Yung Chia. Hsuan Chueh lived in the Yung Chia region of southern Che Chian Province, later known as the Wen Chou Prefecture.

While still a youth, Hsuan Chueh left his home and began studying the Tripitaka, especially the T'ien T'ai. It is said that he received enlightenment upon reading the Vimalakirti Nirdesha Sutra. His enlightenment was later certified by the Sixth Patriarch of the Ch'an/Zen lineage.
