Ramana's quote at the close of your post reminds me of the "Dreaded Gom Boo", an essay by the controversial, "crazy-wise" Adi Da Samraj.  Whatever your view of his teaching methods may be, I think you would have to agree that discussion of "The Imaginary Disease That Religion Seeks To Cure" is perennial wisdom.
