I told a friend just a few days ago that daylight does not necessarily enlighten for others the secrets intuitive women are busy studying in the dark. He was trying to accuse me of being a witch because of my propensity for darkness and I was challenged to defend my preference.
I am now celebrating your very definition of darkness as a realm to itself, not a sorry absence of light and thank you for honoring us women left in dangerous places to defend ourselves against men, nature and who-knows, maybe witchcraft itself. "Fair is foul and foul is fair", depending on the direction of the malevolent air.
The idea of such matters passing through the generations as well compounds the threat and makes all creatures, not just women, more vulnerable.

Hi Ivan
This is a wonderful poem. I am feeling a bit like Medusa myself at the moment, having been bereaved - a very raw place - so your thoughts are so timely. Thank you.

Spot on, Ivan! Great 'revelation' of Medusa who wishes to remain veiled to save us from confronting the abyss. All grace to you and your words.

This is a truly breathtaking poem. It grabbed me by the throat and its power doesn't diminish with re-readings. It made me think of Medusa in a way I never would have. I also appreciated the context you provided, her origins and her diminishment into Athena's myth. Thank you for sharing your powerful poem, and for sending so much good poetry to me every week.
