Beautiful post!

The cornerstone of Hildegard’s spirituality was Viriditas, or greening power, her vision of the animating life force manifest in the natural world, infusing all creation with moisture and vitality. To her, the divine was manifest in every leaf and blade of grass. Just as a ray of sunlight is the sun, Hildegard believed that a flower or a stone was God, though not the whole of God. The spendour of creation revealed the face of the invisible creator.

Her vision of the divine was immanent and life-affirming, and can inspire us today.

My novel, Illuminations, based on her life, will be out this October. Please visit my website if you want to know more.

THE MYSTERY OF THE GREEN MAN

“This delightful Herb
          whose tender Green
Fledges the River’s Lip
          on which we lean-
Ah, lean upon it lightly!
          for who knows
From what once Lovely Lip
          it springs unseen”

O Greenness! It reminds me the story of Moses and Khidr (The Green One) in the Quran (18:60:82). "In the Muslim/Sufi tradition Khidr is alive and well and continues to guide the perplexed and those who invoke his name." ( http://www.khidr.org) or

These are energies ALL have access to, and may have experience of. Later we may read or meet alchemists, yogis, or others and find affirmation. Knowing other systems is not necessarily prior to one's own experience...HvB's poems are possibly merely her interpretation of her own visions... Ivan, thank you for your selection of poems and inspiring commentary.

A "voluptuous" tree that can "dance". What an image. To imagine this is an exercise in itself, a work of the imagination that I find intimidating at first, but if I work on it....
Thanks, marrob

Movement becomes a mystery, while dancing can be seen as an art. A challenge to the dancer to combine his/her beauty with the dancing all at once.

Moses and the burning bush is a provocation to the mind too stubborn to believe.
I really must visit that event again to get it straight. Moses is in himself a difficult subject to understand. And I have come to envy him as the one human being who ever knew his death date.

Ah, this is sublime! And most timely! A perfect time of year to breathe in and feast on and dance through that incandescent green! Love that word - INCANDESCENT.
It's voluptuous and ethereal all in one, like green fire.

Thanks Ivan for sending HVB my way
