I know that feeling you are describing and I know at what sorts of times it comes--when we encounter everlasting truth and feel the love of God. That feeling of "ecstasy" you were describing is exactly what we call in my religion feeling the influence of the "Holy Ghost" or "the Spirit." In our religious texts (scriptures) it is described much the same way: a warming, comforting, a swelling of the breast, an overwhelming and engulfing feeling of love and peace and true joy, often compared to a flame. I was trying to think of a text as an example of how the language used is so similar and thought of this one (though there are so so many more) from the Book of Mormon. From the Book of Alma (a prophet), Chapter 32, especially verses 28-34, which speak of faith growing as a result of actions that bring this flame, revealing truth. So many children come into the world with special wisdom and insight. It can be difficult for parents is to recognize those qualities amidst the normal behaviors and development patterns of childhood. The challenge in raising children like this is to find the right balance between giving children necessary structure and guidance while allowing enough room for their particular light to grow and to shine. Some of the other advice already suggested is very good regarding your son's sensations and experiences: Without trying to define it as being merely physical, it is a good idea to have a standard medical examination. Chiropractic may help to release tension, as well. Craniosacral work and therapeutic massage may also be helpful. One way to understand these sensations is that there is a lot of energy, both physical and subtle, running through the body. We want to make sure it is not hindered in its flow. Healthy movement is always a good ideas, such as stretching and exercise and, of course, play. In a vision I saw that the head is encased in a sphere of liquid light from base of head/top of neck to top of head. A smaller liquid light sphere of about three inches rests on top of the larger sphere. When this was forming, I would itch like crazy at the back of my head and into my neck (and still do). If there is an energy blockage this could cause heat symptoms because of the buildup of the energy. Toning, humming, singing, etc. would help. If it is severe, scream into a pillow to release this energy. Larimar stone cools heat. At my worst when the fire of kundalini was so strong I would rock on my spine. On bed or soft carpet, lie on your back, curl up and support the knees so they don't flop out too far while crossing the ankles and gently rock being careful not to strain the neck. This shift coincides with the beginning of hurricane season. I am astounded at the "meta" connectedness of all things. Upon reading Chinmoy's poem, I immediately began to suspect that he experienced the fires of kundalini. Whether he did or not I do not know but chances are pretty good that he did. I was not taught this spiritual stuff in school and how it could change the reading of a poem and its meaning. Knowing whether Whitman, Shelley, or others of my favorites experienced trans-personal events is important and critical to the reading and the digestion of the poem. The poem becomes not separate from me. I can recall exactly what chair I was sitting in, the window and how the sun melted into my body, the feelings and emotions that flowed like silk when first reading Jane Kenyon.
