\nin the red-rubbed lingam,
\nin copper and brass
\nis Siva\u2019s abode \u2014

\n\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 and you\u2019re wrong.
\nStay where you are
\nand study your own selves.
\nThen you will BECOME
\nthe Temple of God,

I have always loved the poetry of Civivakkiyar since I first discovered it years ago. There is a directness that is at times blunt, along with a teasing quality, and underlying it all a radiant realization that rises up through the words. Even his name, Civivakkiyar, feels like poetry on the tongue.<\/p>\n

This poem exhibits the Tamil Siddha opposition to orthodoxy and mindless ritualism \u2014 which tend to externalize God, separating the individual from the presence of the Divine. Civivakkiyar is proclaiming that God (Siva) is not only found in temples and objects of worship, places and things that have been separated out and defined as sacred. Not \u201cin bricks and in granite,\u201d not in the \u201clingam\u201d (a common representation of Siva), not in the ritual objects of \u201ccopper and brass.\u201d <\/p>\n

To say that God is in the temple or the altar or the icon and not elsewhere impoverishes us spiritually. That perspective makes us strangers to the presence of the sacred, which is everywhere, always. <\/p>\n

The truth is that God is not \u2018out there\u2019 (wherever we imagine \u2018there\u2019 to be). The Divine is right here, right now, within us:<\/p>\n

Stay where you are
\nand study your own selves.
\nThen you will BECOME
\nthe Temple of God\u2026<\/i><\/p>\n

It is only within ourselves that we find the proper ground to worship and ultimately encounter God, whether we stand in the temple precinct, or the marketplace, the forest grove, or the office space.<\/p>\n

When we stop running from sacred place to sacred place and, instead, finally recognize the living sacred presence everywhere \u2014 and most especially within ourselves \u2014 then we experience such an uninhibited flow of life and delight that we become filled with the eternal \u201cdance and spell \/ and song.\u201d<\/p>\n

Civivakkiyar is one of the most revered of the Tamil Siddha poet-saints in southern India.<\/p>\n

Scholars guess that Civivakkiyar lived perhaps in the 9th century. Some of his poetry makes use of relatively modern words borrowed from Sanskrit, meaning he can\u2019t be placed in earlier centuries, yet he is mentioned by the earliest of Pattinattar\u2019s poetry, so he must have lived before the 10th century.<\/p>\n

Like many other Tamil Siddhas, he denounced orthodoxy, mindless ritualism, and the strict caste system, all the while being a genuinely realized mystic.<\/p>\n

His Tamil poems are gathered together in a collection called simply the Patal (Songs).<\/p>\n
