In addition to being a poet, Sakai Yamei was a ronin, a masterless samurai, of the Kuroda Clan. Originally from the southern island of Kyushu, he later settled in Kyoto. He received the haiku name, Yamei, from the great haiku poet, Matsuo Basho.
