Francis Thompson was born to a middle-class Catholic family. He went to medical school but dropped out, succumbing to opium addiction. Thompson spent years wandering London's streets, and was eventually rescued from suicide by a prostitute, before he managed to turn his life around.

Thompson later became famous for his poem "The Hound of Heaven," the tale of a soul that has exhausted itself running away from God until it finally yields to the divine embrace. This poem was extremely popular in the early Twentieth Century, and a favorite of, among others, Paramahansa Yogananda, the great ambassador of Yoga to the West.
